The plan for today was to get to Torino and back, visiting the Egyptian Museum. This has been a "bucket item" on our list, and we figured that while we were at least in the same country, that we might as well do it now. Approximately 20 years ago, we visited the Egyptian Museum in Torino, and it contained some wonderful exhibits. But truly, it was very, very dated and needed lots of attention. Then, some time ago, we learned that the museum had been completely redone -- and we definitely wanted to see it! After all, it had its grand reopening in 2015 after three years of renovation! That's some remodel!
To that end, this morning we were up at 5 to catch the 7:01 train to Florence, to change there to the train to Torino. It was an hour to Florence, and then three hours to Torino. Nice trip, and we were able to sleep some of the way there. We caught a cab from the train station to the Museum, and were there by about 12:30 pm.
Really, truly a staggering difference between our two visits! We seriously did not recognize anything at all from our first visit. They have produced an interesting system of audio guides in multiple languages for multiple interests. There's a family visit, a tour for kids, as well as a longer-themed visit for folks with more time. It also provided more detailed information for those folks who were interested in learning more about specific items.
All in all, it was an amazing experience. The lighting of the exhibits and halls is superb, and they have used mirrors to create all kinds of effects. My favorite was a 15-foot tall statue with a mirror behind him, to show the hieroglyphics on the back. We would definitely recommend this museum to everyone as something they should see, even if only slightly interested in Egyptian history. This is the kind of new technology and content that makes museums great!
Heading to bed!
Much love,
